We have a high-ish income as a family (not $500k but comfortably in the 6 figures with a lower cost of living). For us misc is a budget category and it includes all of the random items you might expect; some nondeductible donations to a family member who is collecting for a friend in need, a parking fine for a trip to the hospital (grr….), a credit for some incorrect bank fees in the past, some items we didn’t track properly in our budget (sub $20 paypal items), that sort of thing. It’s usually about $200 a month.
Vacations also get a lot more pricy with young kids. I won’t take airplane trips with multiple connections with young kids so I pay a little more for flights, and I organise airport transfers so I can ladle kids from airplane to car if they haven’t slept for a while. We often need to fly during peak times too, now that we have school terms to work around. It does usually teach around $10k aussie per week for us to go on a holiday with the kids overseas, a bit less for domestic travel. That seems really high when I look at it but it’s a priority so we do it.
