We had a shelf for bad toys. It was the place anything with an annoying noise got transferred immediately. The kids never noticed as they had so many distractions on their birthday.
For first time parents I get them a cute outfit for the kid, and some kind of gift for them (like a nice bottle of wine, voucher for housecleaning, etc).
