Jobs for once the robots have taken over

There are a lot of stories about the coming wave of automation. However it’s really important to remember this has been a concern since Luddites smashed looms and computers stopped being a job title and turned into an objects. Here are some jobs that I can see people doing (or doing more)in the future;

  • Automation technicians. Rather than doing the work there will be a need to have people who know how to fix and maintain the equipment. These people will need to be good and maths and have excellent analytical skills.
  • Creative jobs. There has been a rise in quest for ‘home-made’ items as you can see in the popularity of sites such as etsy. There will be more jobs where there is a premuim for artisanal goods. An AI will not replace a makeup artist for a loooooong time.
  • Curation jobs. We are generating thousands of photos and digital stories each year, but I can see that an important job in the future will be weaving the memories and stories of yourself and your family into a beautiful and easy to access resource. Maybe a history degree is the degree of the future!
  • People contact jobs. There are many jobs which are about social interaction, so while your elderly neighbours might get their meals delievered by drones, there will still be a need for someone to talk to them and take them seriously.
  • Medical technicians. As the wearable technology markets improves more and more people will have medical data monitored and need medical technicians to improve outcomes. Equally with improvements in AI medical research is likely to undergo some massive improvements as models and testing will be able to run more more quickly and new solution iterated. We’ll have a lot more medical technology at our fingertips and hopefully get some great health improvements.
  • Space travel. There are a range of issues in improving the efficiency of space travel and having more computing grunt and the creative nous of the scientists currently working on other issues should enable us to make some big leaps forward in space travel which is an exciting prospect to me.

Artificial intelligence might take some jobs, but it will create some opportunities. We don’t know what the future of work will look like but personally I’m very excited.
