I’ve had this conversation with a few people. I like the idea fundamentally, but it does struggle a sense check in richer countries. For example in the US if you do a back of the envelope calculation on total tax receipt per person you get $15k per year per person which isn’t much at all and in many cases not enough to lift people out of poverty if that is all of the income. You can, of course, subtract out children which raises the figure slightly (to around $20k) but that leaves absolutely no money for government services such as schools and roads. To raise the kind of income that you need to provide UBI without cutting services you would need to double tax receipts which would be absolutely brutal. It’s a great plan in developing countries or countries with a big sinking fund such as the Norwegian oil fund but not so easy in the US or Australia.
